For those unfamiliar with an indexing washer the purpose is to change the thread length of a spark plug so that when it is tightened into the cylinder head the rotational position is altered. Basically they are shims. By choosing a specific thickness shim you can 'index' the electrode opening towards the direction of the intake valve so that there is an optimal chance of igniting the fuel charge. There are four different thicknesses of shims so technically you could have five different rotational angles for the spark plug, if you include not using a shim at all.So if you buy into the idea that this will have an actual effect on performance then it is a worthwhile endeavor. The reality is that indexing spark plugs is a concept that has been around for a long time. A great deal of effort is spent on blueprinting engines so that each cylinder has as close to the same dimensions and characteristics as is technically possible. Indexing the plugs is just another step in making sure that each cylinder fires consistently.These washers were inexpensive and I will find out how they work once I have access to the engine I'm indexing, that will be a few weeks. They are a pretty simple device so I am not expecting any issues. What I am really looking for is more consistent starting, which I hope to also improve with a set of Iridium Spark Plugs.
